SCHOOLS & EDUCATION
Here is a list of websites and links for (4) of the School Districts in Kitsap County. Each district has resources for citizens to become involved in the district financial decision and budget making process.
In the budget year 2011 - 2012 there will be major funding shortfalls to every district in this state to to the tune of $4 to $6 Million dollars for each district. This is because of increased payments due to state mandated teacher retirement plans as well as some state funding sources drying up and going away completely. One of the existing funding sources that will be gone is the residual stimulus money from the federal government. Most districts are currently at their maximum LID capacity with it comes to the percentage of levy money they can ask from taxpayers and property owners.
What this means is that the very broken education system in this state is out of short term fixes and out of band aids. Some districts in Washington are already facing possible insolvency in the next budget year. What is coming will break the back of education business as usual practices and politics as we have come to know them. Finally an opportunity to hit the proverbial "reset button" will occur.
What we as citizens and parents need to recognize right now, is the fact that we have an opportunity to have a major, influential seat at the table when the reconstruction of education begins. To be ready we need to lay the ground work now...this year.
Here is how you can start:
Before the end of this school year, contact the school district that you belong to using one of the links provided.
Ask them how you can participate or sign up for their Citizen Budget Committee that will ramp up again and typically accept new members this coming fall.
Fill out the application to become a member if they require one and attend one of the meetings they already have scheduled before the end of this school year to get an idea of how the committee is made up and what you should be looking for when you begin your service this fall.
*ALL DISTRICT CITIZEN MEETINGS ARE OPEN MEETINGS. ANYONE CAN ATTEND AT ANYTIME!!!*
